Enacted in 1976, the Antiquities and Monuments Ordinance stipulates that the ownership of every relic discovered in Hong Kong vests in the government from the moment of discovery. Archaeologists also have to apply for a licence to search for and excavate archaeological finds. After they have completed their studies and the relevant documentation, any archaeological finds that they have discovered have to be handed over to the permanent custody of the government. The Central Archaeological Repository was established to collect archaeological finds unearthed in Hong Kong. While giving academics the opportunity to study these archaeological finds, the repository also displays them in museums for the public to view.
